http://nimg.sulekha.com/others/thumbnailfull/india-nano-2009-4-9-8-24-3.jpg

In order to be able to sell advertising space you need to know how the industry works and what adverts are proving most effective. An advertising Sales executive needs to provide clients with reasons as to why they should buy some advertising space and the rewards it will bring them or their company.

Having a good knowledge of the advertising industry is crucial to this role, but having a knowledge of the following areas is certainly advantageous. It is important to have good written English skills so that any copy written on behalf of clients is error free. The text needs to be spelt correctly and written in a logical and constructive way.

Administration skills are also very useful for Advertising Jobs. The process of researching, obtaining and delivering adverts to clients needs to be documented along the way. All client accounts need to be kept up to date and contracts, client details and finished adverts need to be kept in a safe and easily accessible place.

Advertising falls within the communications and media industry. Advertising sales executives should be aware of other forms of advertising within the media industry in order to stay ahead of the competition and provide a complete service to clients.

Due to the fact that Advertising sales jobs involve a large amount of close contact with clients it is important for applicants to have experience in customer relations. An advertising sales executive needs to be friendly and provide excellent attention to detail in order to meet clients needs.

It is clear that this job requires a good knowledge across several different industries. In conjunction with this, there is a range of skills that any advertising sales candidate should posses. Good negotiation skills will help to give a good price for clients but also generate as much revenue for the company as possible. This role also requires the employee to be able to agree the amount of work that they will do for a client. Taking on too much work for too little money will not reflect well on the employee's ability to carry out their job successfully.

Good time management skills are also very important for this role. The advertising industry is governed by strict deadlines. Advertising sales executives must hit their sales targets, produce campaigns on time and submit information to their manager on demand.

Advantages of a Sales as a career

http://www.startupagents.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/sales-up.jpg

While I would never want to discourage anyone from going into sales I also wanted to make it clear that there are massive advantages to a career in sales. Here are six of them.

1. Its fun. Life was meant to be fun so you might as well have fun making a high income.

2. Skills are portable. The selling skills you perfect over the years can be adapted into any markets. Sure you may have some change with product knowledge but your sales skills can be easily adapted to suit the market.

3. In demand. Skilled top performing salespeople are always in demand. In most circumstances the individual any company would really love to hire is a top-quality salesperson to sell the product or service. The demand of a top quality salespeople is almost impossible to fill.

4. No income ceilings. In a sales profession there are no income ceilings. The better performing sales person you are, the potential more commission you can make. Could you ever imagine your sales manager ever coming up to you saying you doing a great job but you'll have to slow down. I doubt that.

5. Low capital investment . Selling offers potentially massive returns from a very low capital investment. Unlike a doctor you do not need to go to college for seven years. Unlike buying a franchise you do not need to come up with several hundred thousand dollars upfront. You can start your sales career with a tiny cost compared to the business owner. Your investment will be time in learning the skills of selling and if you learn these skills well your return on investment will be huge.

6. Selling is challenging. Every day in your selling career you will be challenged. No two days are the same. Every day you'll be confronted with new obstacles to overcome.

Selling can be one of the most rewarding careers you can ever be involved with. For a low investment you can get into a career that can earn you several hundred thousand dollars per year. Unlike many other careers, you can earn a lot of money very fast and be challenged every day with numerous new challenges. It's an awesome lifestyle.

Marketing as a career

A career in marketing is enjoyable and fun. Most people who work in marketing will tell you it provides them with the challenge they have always wanted. The reason being is marketing is always changing; there are always techniques to learn, cases to study, and strategies to research.

Do you have what it takes?

  • Can you communicate your thoughts, ideas, and information clearly and concisely both in writing and verbally?
  • Are you able to recognise problems and devise an appropriate plan of action to resolve that problem?
  • Can you organise and interpret complex data?
  • Are you good at generating new ideas? Can you then take and organize those ideas and communicate them verbally?
If you possess the qualities above then you could be a good candidate for entering and being successful in the career of marketing. Marketing offers various career opportunities, so it's easy to choose one that reflects your interest, values, and personal style.

As a marketing major you can gain experience in your chosen career by participating in an internship or volunteering in service learning and community projects. Samples of potential experiences include:

  • Conducting Market Research for a Fortune 500 Company.
  • Promoting products through development of Point-of-Purchase displays.
  • Spending time reviewing potential cost, price, and market research for service programs.
  • Learning how to research customer base potential using available data.
  • Designing an advertising or promotional campaign to promote new services.
  • Developing a marketing plan for a global business.

What if you don't have a college degree in marketing?

Don't worry. I think you will find the statistics in the chart to the right not only interesting, but encouraging. The table below shows the percentage and the degree background of new graduates that have begun a career in marketing.

So now that I've given you hope, how do you get your foot in the door? It will take determination and persistence, but it can be done. You will find that a start in marketing will normally put you in an entry position as a market research assistant, print buyer, general management trainee, or you can enter a program as a graduate trainee.

A few companies that offer marketing graduate trainee programs include:

1) Mars:- Mars does not have a specific marketing training program for graduates. They run a cross-functional management development program, through which graduates have access to opportunities in marketing. Recruits to the program are typically given three to four assignments, the first of which may be related to their experience or studies. The remaining assignments will be in other areas, and one may be overseas. Their goal is to broaden trainees' experiences.

2) Nestle:- Nestle has recently changed its approach to hiring graduates. Nestle recruits in a similar fashion as to how they recruit other employee levels. Each department now recruits graduates throughout the year on an 'as-required' basis. Vacancies will be posted and advertised throughout the year.

3) Procter and Gamble:- Procter & Gamble's graduate training program recruits graduates into one of eight career tracks, including consumer and market knowledge and marketing. Consumer and market knowledge involves sophisticated and proactive market research-based work to identify business opportunities, including new product development. The marketing function involves growing the value of brands within the P&G product range. Marketing trainees will learn about advertising, PR, consumer bonding, direct marketing and project management within their first two years. The applicants are selected according to application form, a problem-solving test, interview, and site visit, where they will meet prospective managers and colleagues.

If you decide that the graduate training program route is not for you; you can still break into the field of marketing by being persistent. You will need to be willing to take on an entry-level position in most marketing agencies and work your way up. If this isn't a problem then it's time to begin your first marketing assignment, which is marketing you by developing that resume.
